The Client's Billing System Has Already Decided What Your AI Work Is Worth
Corporate legal departments are changing how they hire and pay outside law firms. Many now add AI cost requirements to their outside counsel guidelines. Automated e-billing systems enforce those rules by rejecting charges that do not comply. At the same time, corporate work is moving away from large firms toward smaller and mid-size firms that offer lower rates and strong value.
Bill AI-assisted work without the disclosure the bar opinions require, and you face ethics exposure in more than eight jurisdictions. Pass through AI software costs the client treats as overhead, and the invoice comes back rejected. Ignore an AI-discount demand, and the client sets your price for you. Pitch a corporate RFP on rate alone, and quality-perception bias sends the work back to a large firm.
You leave with disclosure language, fee arrangement models built for AI-era pricing, billing audit frameworks, and clear strategies for handling e-billing rejections. Smaller and mid-size firms also leave with pitch materials, positioning strategies for panel programs and RFPs, and a plan for using outcomes data to prove quality. These are pricing and pitching judgments clients pay a lawyer to make, not tasks a billing tool can make for you.

Attorneys will learn the ethics rules on AI billing in more than eight jurisdictions, how automated invoice review works, and how to structure alternative fee arrangements that meet client cost expectations while protecting firm revenue. Attendees will leave with compliant disclosure practices, fee models built for AI-era pricing, and clear strategies for handling e-billing rejections.
BREAK | 3:30pm – 3:40pm
SESSION 2 – Pricing and Pitching Against the Rate Gap: Capturing Corporate Work Moving to Smaller Firms | Keith Maziarek | 3:40pm – 4:40pm
This session gives attorneys at mid-size and smaller firms the data, pricing methods, and pitch strategies they need to compete for corporate work moving away from large firms. Attorneys will learn how to build alternative fee arrangements that win on value rather than rate alone, how to position their firms in panel programs and corporate RFPs, and how to overcome quality-perception bias with strong credentials and outcomes data. Attendees will leave with practical tools to identify, pursue, and close corporate work in a market that now favors smaller platforms.
